5 Comments Bloggers and YouTubers Generally Hate

Please Follow Me On Bloglovin

Hello Everyone,

It's been a while since we had a Top 5 post on here, what with Christmas and all the rush, my usual posting topics have been a little haywire but I'm back again with another Top 5.

Last year my Top 5 posts were some of your favourites, my favourite Top 5's were:

Top 5 Things Disney Failed to Prepare Me For
Top 5 Worst PR Emails I've Ever Had
Top 5 Worst Things About Living With A Man
Top 5 Reasons I Have Beef With Barbie - and no, this isn't a body image post.

But today I'm going to have a little rant about something that has been driving me crazy the last couple of months and that is:

Top 5 Comments Bloggers and YouTubers Generally Hate

Number 1: - "Great"

I am a fan of writing fun posts, Top 5s or beauty reviews when I compare a body cream to Kate Middleton... that sort of thing, but I also like to get serious in these parts too, like when I discussed the adverse effects of FOMO (That's Fear of Missing Out) or when I talked about the horror that is Female Genital Mutilation and on these types of posts (where the topic isn't all light and fluffy) getting a comment such as 'great' or 'this is perfect!!'  is really bloody annoying! So Female Genital Mutilation is great? You didn't read what I'd written did you? No.
To top it off, you just spammed me your link, I like to go and leave a comment on any links I am sent but not when it's obvious you're not a reader, you're a spammer.

Number 2: - "Follow for Follow?"

Same as above, spam! I don't know how many times this has to be discussed on twitter chats, comment sections, blog posts and videos, seriously people! Please, for the love of google, stop with the follow for follow, because most of us won't go for it.

Number 3: - Fight Club

This is something I've been getting on my YouTube Channel since I uploaded a video about the book 'Everyday Sexism' (you can see that video here) and in this video I discuss some worrying points, trends and stats that this brilliant book highlighted to me, this was a book that really opened my eyes to the amount of sexism in Britain today, but here's the little twist... the book also discusses some of the sexism that men face which I mentioned in my video... Unfortunately a select few men have seen me sitting there with a book about sexism and haven't listened to a word I've said... I've had emails, tweets and a couple of comments from men that I can only describe as tossers Complete Idiots either kicking off calling me a man hater, a privileged idiot jumping on a bandwaggon or anything else they please (and a couple of the emails have been unpleasant to say the least)  when if they'd bloody watched the video, they would see me say nothing of the sort.
For the record, I don't hate men, I've had some very good male friends and hell, I'm married to a legit member of the male species - complete with xbox and FIFA for god sake!
There are always people around that just want a fight and will actively search for videos or posts about subjects they want to row about, these people are morons, lesson over.

Number 4: - Unwanted Religion

This has been another annoying trend I've seen on YouTube. I watch a lot of storytimes on YouTube, I love hearing about the lives of others and I've also uploaded a couple of my own paranormal storytimes (such as my first Ouija Board experience) but on my ouija board videos I received a persistent commenter who was desperate to tell me I needed to repent, to be christened and to find God etc etc, simply due to the content of this video... I've seen similar annoying comments on the storytimes of others and seriously, what do these commenters think they will achieve? They have no idea if I'm already Christened or religious or anything, same thing with the other channels I've seen this on, it's invasive and unwanted, please stop.

Number 5: - "LOL"

As I've mentioned, I do like a good light hearted post, a bit of a laugh now and then but sometimes I do write a normal or serious post, and when these posts (or videos) receive a comment saying "LOL!!!" (or similar) I'm not quite sure where to go with that... What does it mean? Where am I going? Did I have something on my face? Why are we laughing?????
It's just a comment that's sure to throw me right off, every single time... Probably why people leave it to be fair.

So that's my Top 5 Comments I hate getting, let me know if you've experienced similar ones yourself.

  4. I also strongly dislike when I get comments or private DMs on Instagram asking for a F4F. I don't put the hashtag f4f anywhere on my photos nor is the purpose of my account to follow people so I get follows in return so I can definitely related to that frustration. I do hate getting generic comments to although I'm guilty that I may have put a few of those on other Instagram pages when I'm browsing on autopilot ( my fingers are typing but my brain isn't really there). I do usually read the caption though and try to comment something more specific to what the person is actually saying with the photo.

Hope you have a great rest of your week!

I mean it was nice to have an extra comment but I ended up hating it.

  8. I hate the one word reply or follow for follow comments. Like you said you know they did not read your post. I have had a few particular people who have done this consistently on all of my post for months even though I already followed them.So now I just ignore them. Unfortunately when you blog/vlog about something half way serious or controversial all of the contrarians will come out of the woodwork with their anecdotal evidence as if it will change your perspective. They are not there for conversation but to talk at you. I guess it is just a hazard of our profession.

  18. I was so tempted to start this comment with LOL but I actually think LOL does apply cause I did find this blog post quite entertaining to read. I couldn't agree more with the random comments people tend to leave. I've been fortunate so far with not a lot of random comments left on my blog but with Instagram I get the ones where I know they didn't read my caption. I think this comes from the unfortunate reality that we all want to get our content out there and in the haste of trying to engage with other bloggers, instagramers, youtubers etc some of us get caught up in that and lose the attempt to try to genuinely engage? I don't know if this is true or not but that's my perspective on it. As always, I enjoy reading these types of posts from you because they are definitely relateable and I think it's great you are bringing attention to it!

  29. Yes to all of these! I admit I don't always the most interesting things to say but I like to keep my comments at least relevant. There have been beauty posts that get comments like "I love your outfit!" or street style posts that get comments like "you look so cute in those jeans." Um it ain't me wearing those jeans. Another pet peeve is when someone's links to their own socials/ blogs are longer than their comment. The absolute worse comments are when people include their own photos or videos in their comments. On disqus they're embedded and they just look like spam! As you can tell from this comment I have a lot of strong feelings on this topic ;) Thanks for taking the time to talk about it!

    "Great post!
    Visit my blog!
    (Link of blog here)
    (Link of twitter here)
    (Link of instagram here)

I do not have any problem with links, honestly, I prefer links at the bottom of the comment because it's easier to visit blogs, but that much links with only that much comment is kind of annoying. That is actually the reason why I prefer to visit lifestyle and personal blogs over beauty/fashion blogs. Beauty/fashion bloggers are usually guilty of the "Great post!" comments.

I actually love reading YouTube comments, haha. I don't know why people are always hating. People disagree over the most simple things, it's a bit hilarious and dramatic. I mean, what are you doing, watching that video, when you hate the band in that video, like you said? It's much easier to click the close button than commenting "Ugh, I hate this band! This music video is terrible!" I don't know if people are trolling sometimes or purposely looking for fights.

Another fave is "thank you for your comment on my blog. New post >>insert link<<". These ones don't even bother pretending like they've read a thing.
I also got the "repent yourself..." comment, on a post that had nothing to do with religion or anything like that. Maybe my post wan't godly enough for them, honestly I don't really care.

But I know personally, there have been times I get caught up in one aspect of the story or post and just comment on that part. However, I don't always let the writer know which part I'm referring to, so I can be totally confusing, I bet!

  61. I relate to the first 2. It's so annoying to see sometimes bloggers pour their hearts out about what they're going through and someone comments great. or I like this a lot. Like really? Then 'will you like to support each other' like omg. Another great read. Happy new year!

I especially hate 'follow for follow' or 'following you - follow back', closely followed by 'great', and on social media, I hate it when I post a photo of a view and someone comments 'you look beautiful' when I'm not even in the photo! I don't go on 'YouTube' much so haven't yet encountered your points 3 and 4, but that sounds even worse!

  66. If I could insert cry laughter emojis on this, I would! Me and my friend was talking about this the other day after somebody had commented on her photo of a hot chocolate saying "you look great". It makes me sad that comments are used as some sort of "reply to me" tool, just comment if you like the damn post. With something more thoughtful than LOL. Also, Youtube is a whole other ball game when it comes to negativity, there is no barrier on that platform!

Thankfully I have yet to receive any hate mails or nasty private DMs but I agree with another comment here, your review of Everyday Sexism is thought provoking and is considered sensitive by many so of course you'll get a bunch of people who didn't watch the video but just had to be nasty. 70. Love this post cracked me up! The amount of times I get comments just saying 'great post' and I know full well they haven't read it - one comment was even on a break up post, not really appropriate? People just copy and paste the same comment and hope that it applies to every post even though they haven't read it. I'd just rather people didn't comment then post something completely irrelevant!

  72. Hey, would like a follow for follow? .... KIDDING!! :) I really find annoying those who are asking for an "f4f" I know why they do it but it's not really an effective way to get a real honest following, even in social media. And I totally agree with you in "great" and those other generic comments. When they leave a comment like that I know they didn't really read my post. Though honestly, sometimes I'm guilty of it because either the post is really REALLY long and I already got tired of reading it in the middle or before that... or I really have nothing to say about the post because it's just full of photos or very few words.

  83. I was just scrolling through your comments here to see if anyone even read this post and still left you comments which read 'great' and it looks like a few didn't bother to read and did the generic copy and paste, which is hilarious! I get so annoyed, just like you, when people don't read my text and leave me thoughtless comments. There's a few bloggers in particular who I know do this and it drives me nuts. I had to put a disclaimer on my recent post about my nan who passed away this week and she was my role model, so I wrote if anyone leaves a comment without reading this post, it will be deleted. Sure enough, I received comments saying great post or something along those lines. The same as you with female genitalia mutilation, my nan having passed away is not great. It really drives me insane to the point that I don't even want to comment on some people's blogs anymore because of it. Sometimes I've not been able to read all the text in a massive post, but I get the jist of it, or foreign ones I try to translate, but I never completely disregard everything said and tell them it's great.

I don't write a lot on my blog but I put a lot of effort in the outfit preparation and taking pictures of the outfit during the winter and big frost is really hard so when someone leave on my blog this kind of comments I'm really mad. No need for a vice versa that no one benefits from, because I am pretty sure these people subscribed to 1345 others don't really watch the videos, it is impossible.
