Top 5 Awkward PR Emails I've Received

Hello Everyone,

Today is a fun post, not meant to cause any offense as always but hopefully this will lift the lid on some of the strange PR emails that bloggers receive daily.

Major disclaimer, 99.9% of PR people I've had the pleasure of working with have been lovely individuals and I'm fully aware that most PR people have had to deal with some very difficult and rude bloggers too, where there are people, there will always be the occasional bad egg on either side.

As we all know, one of the perks of being a Blogger/YouTuber is the opportunity to work with brands and companies but when I first started blogging, I thought I had to take on everything offered to me at risk of causing offense, I've since realised this was not the way to go and now I turn down PR offers that either don't fit my content or aren't something I would have been interested in buying or doing myself which has lead to a much happier blogging experience, however, some PR companies can be a little bizarre, pushy or downright threatening, which brings me to...

The Top 5 Awkward PR Emails I've Received

So without further ado I'll kick it off with the less severe and more amusing emails building up to the company of doom... The Mr Hollywood.
All company names have been changed but real emails have been used.

1. The Confused Chancers.

These types of email flood in daily, easily recognisable by the invariable lack of any knowledge about you or your blog. They either get your name wrong or refer to you as 'Dear' and have no idea what sort of content you write.

Hello Hannah,

Hope you are finding this heat wonderful! Over here at Chancers.com We love your craft blog 'Sparkles of Light' and your amazing flare for creativity, We would love you to feature 16 creative card ideas, linking to our card making supplies: Link Removed
We would be grateful if you could make this a follow link and we will promote 10 of the best blogs on our newsletter so if you're lucky you could be chosen!

Let me know when your post is live.

Thank you

Deborah

Now... where do I start, Deborah? Firstly I'd like to know who Hannah is because I've certainly never met her... Also, and this is awkward Deborah, but I'm as crafty as cheese in a blender, it ain't happening love.
Now Deborah... May I call you Debbie? Debbie, as I'm sure you know, asking people to use follow links is a no, just look up Google rules, familarise yourself love.
Finally, did you really just ask me to come up with 16 (bizarre number Deb but let's roll with it) card designs and then pray you like the hours I put in it to be featured in a newsletter I'm pretty certain doesn't exist? For shame Debbie, For shame.

2. The Money Monsters

Special shout out to the bad lads who try and push you into spending money on something you don't want to advertise them...

Hi Rosy,

My name is Colin and I work for Money Monsters Inc and we really love your writing style, we would, therefore, like to extend this fantastic opportunity your way.

Our 'Amber Gem' pendant retails for £165 but we are willing to offer it to you for just £140 in return for a post with links to our 'Gem Pendant' page.

As you can clearly see, this is a rare and exciting opportunity and we eagerly await your decision.

Colin

Erm, Colin... did you really just ask me to blow my monthly food allowance on a pendant I don't actually want or like and promote you for the privilege? Just think about that Colin and get back to me, yeah?

3. The Keyboard Lean

This has only happened to me once but it was pretty weird.

Hi Rosy,

We are looking fg= some ne

Yeah... That was the email, I emailed them back to ask what the malfunction was and they never responded... Least they got my name right though, eh?

4. The Face Slapper

This is up there with the worst PR email I've ever had although it has been knocked off the top spot by the email you'll see at number 5.
I was kindly sent this email by a company who now have a smaller social media following than I do, but at the time of this email, I had been blogging for only a few months and only had a few followers...

Hello Sparkles of Light Blog,

We have noticed you liked one of our posts on Twitter (Side note, it was a motivational quote I liked) and after taking a look at your blog it is clear to us that there is work to be done, your writing style doesn't flow and your pictures are of an inferior quality combined with your low social following, leads me to inform you that you just aren't big enough to work with us yet, however, you may still purchase from our web site and should you publish an outfit inspiration blog with our products we will remember your loyalty and one day you may be big enough to apply to work alongside us as a blogger of merit.

Happy Tuesday

*Brand Name Removed*

Well... This is awkward isn't it, I never asked to work with this company, I simply liked a post but to me, this is like smiling at someone's baby in the street only for them to follow you home, knock at your door, tell you your outfit is crap and punch you in the throat. Not cool.

I never purchased anything from this brand and never would after such an unsolicited dressing down, plus I have more followers than them now so who's laughing these days. (Me... That would be me).

5. The Mr Hollywood

This is by far the worst email sequence I've ever had and is too long to put all the emails back and forth here so here is the back story.

Back in the early days of blogging, I was approached by a skincare company who wanted me to post an 'honest' review of their products. As I've already said, I didn't know that turning down products was a thing and I also didn't know that it wasn't common practice for a company to demand to see your post before it was published and that they aren't supposed to try and dictate what you write... Yeah.

So long story short, I received 7 days worth of skincare (which, as we all know, isn't really enough to give an honest opinion), I tried to formulate a review and stated how long I'd been using the product, how it performed and I compared the company I was reviewing being dictated from, to another company who is much more well known. I sent my review back to the fuhrur company and in return I received an email longer than my Sephora and Amazon wishlists combined.

The company basically demanded that I changed the entire post, they wanted any comparisons removed, the wanted me to lie about how my skin felt and also lie about how long I used the samples for, I declined and below is an excerpt from the email I was sent in response:

It makes no difference if you used the skincare system for a week, a month or a year! The results won't change and you only had a reaction because you aren't used to the intensity of the natural ingredients!

Further down the line:

Comparing us to *Company Removed* is like a slap in the face to be honest, we use much higher quality ingredients than they could even imagine having under their belt! You need to remove this disgusting comparison from this review unless you'd like me to personally see to it that you don't work again within this industry.

I mean, this email speaks for itself, I'm not sure how a company (even a shady one that wants you to post lies) can stop a person writing what they fancy or shooting videos and uploading... This ain't Hollywood pal!
All jokes aside, there isn't much else to say about this company other than to offer a slow round of applause for being the shadiest company I've come across in the 3-4 years I've been blogging.

So that brings us to the end, if you're not a blogger, I hope you still enjoyed this post and if you are a blogger, let me know if you relate to any of these.

Bye for now

Rosy xx

  1. Wow! I have yet to be contacted by any PR company (or are we supposed to contact them?!) but this was really interesting! People really have some nerve- if you want someone to promote your product you'd think you'd be kind about it right? lol. Thanks for this insight!

  3. I don't know which I'm most shocked about to be honest! I *think* I'm gonna have to vote for the one that emailed you after liking their twitter picture, how horrible! The thing is, the people that are really up their own arse are usually from brands with less followers than you, and you know the brand will disappear off the face of the earth in a year/how long it takes for the world to realise how shady they are!

  4. Can only agree with Kirstie. Usually the smaller the brand, the more they pride themselves and nothing is ever good enough for them. This is mainly because they are start-ups and the people have poured in heart and soul into their products so anything critic...erm cross out NEGATIVE will be ripped off straight away.

To the other emails I can say, I had some of them too. From unpersonalised emails, or emails with a complete wrong name to "Hello, how do you feel about posting this infografic (about grass mowers when my blog focuses on fashion) alongside your own pictures and a 1000 word article" or "we would love to see how you style item xx (they never offer to send you item xx) in a wishlist/fashion post" and no compensation is offered. Sure I'll sit down for 6h+ to text, photograph and compose engaging content for free.

Posts like these are so insightful how bloggers would like to be approached (and not) so thanks for raising awareness!

    1. I'm so pleased yet sorry that you've experienced the same, it really is rather rude that people would expect you to disrupt your usual content and work for hours for no obvious gain as half the time I've heard that these companies don't even share your posts :/

  8. Oh wow, those last two really take the cake. I can't believe people actually think it's okay to send emails like that. I get the odd wrong name emails or ones where they say they like this post I wrote (but never did) I just bin them. I don't get the ones where they want you to do 101 things in a blog post as an entry to a competition or when they give a vague summary of something that could be interesting but with no links or press release attachments. Ah well, I've seen both sides of the playing field with this and the ridiculousness happens everywhere. :p x

  12. This post is brilliant! And so refreshing to see as I always wonder if it's just me that's sits there baffled by the emails I receive! The last one is absolutely insane and thankfully I've never received anything like that! I'm always getting the "collaborative" posts where they ask you to write about a certain topic and link to their brand, yet after spending ages compiling a pretty damn good (in my opinion) they ALWAYS, ALWAYS contact me asking me to change text, to remove the word "collaborate" and replace with "I was inspired to write this by..." (Er NO) and they NEVER return the favour and share my post to get me exposure!
Ironically, the few times I've actually been sent legit emails offering decent samples they are generally far less demanding and high maintenance than the one offering nothing!
Ps. Those ones that say "dear" and offer to write posts for me make me LOL.

I delete so many bad PR emails, I used to reply to ones that wanted me to do this, that and god knows what else for them for free but don't bother any more, why should we waste our energy! ;) It's so refreshing to see an honest post like this, I'm sure so many of us bloggers can relate and it's nice we can see the funny side! So sorry you've had experiences like these, LOL at that company who have less twitter followers, how dare they dress you down like that! They're going bloody no-where that's for sure! <3

I did however had a really horrid experience and it's with a small family company that creates natural deodorant. They demanded that I removed the part about the deodorant caused a irritation so I told them nope, I'm pulling down the whole post as I am not leaving half truth.

The last two emails are appalling, how anyone have the cheek to write such emails is beyond me.
